kkscatnip: (just write!)

So, I'm doing the "write about 100 things in your blog" challenge, only I don't know that I can force myself to write about, uh, myself just yet so I'm doing a "write 100 short, smutty stories" thing instead.

I'm hoping this will get me more into the habit of writing short stories that are actually short! I've had trouble with that lately, so this is my answer to that trouble. :D

This is so going to make my writing tag even more disproportionate to the rest of my journal, ahaha.
kkscatnip: Original (Default)
Author: [personal profile] kkscatnip
Fandom/Pairings: Original characters (f/f, m/f, and m/m pairings)
H/C: arrest, atonement, bites, blood loss, bullet wounds, combat, deprogramming, difficult pregnancy, disappearing, falling, fire, first transformation, food poisoning, hazing, isolation, major illness, minor illness, moving, nervous breakdown, ocstracized from society, rape/non-con, secret identity discovered, septicemia or infected wounds, unconsciousness, unwanted transformation (card is here)
Total wordcount: 20,951
Warnings: Next to the prompts if there are any for that section.
Rating: PG-NC-17 (heavier on the PG side than the NC-17 side)
Summary: I made up a universe with six characters and all of these prompts center around them. The prompts are interconnected in many cases and meant to be read in the order that they are posted here. The stories don't have titles and some of them are directly connected but for the most part they're complete little snapshots of the characters' lives at that point in time.

Failing utterly at posting any journal entries. Here's a meme instead:

that 'ask your pairing mundane questions' meme )

I wonder what it says that three of my four kind-of contemporary pieces are OT3s and not pairings, heh heh heh.

In other news, my [community profile] smut_fest fics are up for this round:

On The Turning Away - LJ; DW
Pairing: m/m
Warnings: Underage (14-15), grooming, rape/non-con sex, dub-con situation in general, non-POV character death, extremely abusive relationship, happi endo
Word Count: ~15,000
Summary: In a world where demons torture humans for fun, religions are based on how they deal with the threat of demons. Ziyans offer up their priests--people often purchased as children from impoverished families--for the greater good. But is it really worth it? Can any good come from consorting with demons?

Chip Off the Old Block - LJ; DW
Pairing: f/m, mention of f/f
Warnings: Older woman/teenage boy
Word Count: ~6,900
Summary: Ardal's bound and determined to have General Moyra Hattikar train his fire talent. She refuses to teach him to kill people with his talent, but he is too stubborn to take no for an answer.
kkscatnip: Friday Night Lights (silly)

[livejournal.com profile] smut_fest is an original fiction exchange open to all pairings. M/m, m/f, f/f, threesomes of all types, and trans* pairings as well; there is something for everyone! Sign-up for our fourth round, Dark Fantasy, and get a gift story written to your prompts/interests in exchange for writing a gift story for someone else.

We're a great community for anyone testing the water with original fiction, since you get several prompts to work from and the word count requirement is low: only 2k. Not to mention that you will get a gift come hell or high water; we recently had a round where a quarter of our participants dropped out and everyone still got a fic. Our pinch hitters are very dedicated people and have returned every round to sign-up again!

Sign up and join us today!

OMG I AM SO EXCITED FOR THE NEXT ROUND. And I am glad prompt 8 is being well-received; I really hope someone writes it *_*

Additionally, all fics have been posted for the Folklore round! There's m/m, m/f, m/m/f, f/f, and m/m/m(/m) pairings... something for everyone :3 And some of the stories are quite good, too. Mine is "Payback's A Bitch (But I Like It)"

kkscatnip: (just write!)
So, here's everything I have worked on from November forward that I actually do want to finish one day. I am posting the first 300-600 words of the things, so y'all can get an actual idea of what the story is like.

Chaos Theory - sci-fi; 80k+ words; one of my NaNo projects.
Three guys and the ways and times that they meet as they bounce around the universe.

Machlin - fantasy; ~25k; co-written with [personal profile] penny.
This is going to be a HUGE project when it is done, but... I really do love the world and the characters that we created, so I want badly to finish it.

Learning Curve - sci-fi; 2.5k words.
This is a follow-up to a published story called Trust Me. I really, really want to finish this one, and then write Sera's story, and put them all together in a little anthology.

The Boy and the Lightning - urban fantasy; 25k words.
50k weekend project that I just ended up dropping like a bad habit because I got burnt out.

Demon priest - fantasy; 5k.
Just calling this one by its file name, heh. I tried to write this for an anthology, but I just felt so much like I was forcing the story. But, I do want to finish this; it's an interesting premise.

What You Wish For - fantasy; 54k.
This is my current project and it is going to get finished even if I have to beat it out of myself, omg. I love it so hard!

Yeah, I write a lot.

Sometimes I wonder: what would my writing be like if I'd never been a part of Rent-a-Gundam?

I wouldn't be as conscious of sentence structure, for sure. I probably wouldn't vary my sentences as much or constantly remind myself to put more than actions into the text, because the reader needs to know what the characters are feeling and because it's an easy way to vary your structure.

I probably wouldn't be as into the whole publishing/editing thing as I am now, having learned a lot of what I know on the editing side from Orange. I'd done some editing before that, yeah, but it was her who really had the standards in the group and kind of imposed them on the rest of us. (Not that we were unwilling. We were just lazy.)

It's very likely that I wouldn't analyze writing the way I do now, looking for the things that make it awesome or boring. And ways to make a paragraph intentionally monotonous or intentionally anything else.

I wouldn't have quite so much storytelling experience under my belt.

And the most important thing I learned from RAG, I think, is how to produce. How to buckle down and just write. And write. And write a little bit more.

I wouldn't be as good of a writer without RAG. I'm not sure how much worse I'd be for sure (all of that RP with Lucy did a lot to improve my writing before RAG ever happened) because I was a decent writer before, but I think without RAG I'd never have really paid attention to writing the way I did when I was neck-deep in writing during every bit of free time.

I'm really thankful for RAG. For Orange and Typo and Veda, and for all the RAG fans. For [profile] tensergorn.

My life would really not be the same if I'd never found that prompt, I think.
kkscatnip: AnoHana (sexytimes)
It's come around again to [community profile] smut_fest sign-ups. I'm super-excited (and super-nervous) this round because it seems like a lot of the sign-ups are looking for threesomes (threesomes with men and women, too, which makes me happy--now we've had a f/f round and a m/m round, maybe we'll get a m/f round out of the deal) BUT we have a folklore focus.

I really love reading folklore, but I'm pretty crap at writing it. So, nervous about that. But threesomes. I would do anything for well-written threesomes *_* even trying my hand at folklore.

So, uh, yeah: if you like folklore (check the sign-up--everything and anything is fair game) and original fic or you want to write/read threesomes, or you're just interested in trying out smut_fest... check it out! We have wonderful writers who come back every round (five sign-ups so far, and I haven't pimped it at all) and pinch-hitters who are superb and come through every single time so you're assured to get something :D

In other news, I found out yesterday that I am moving on Saturday. Uhhhh yeah. Cue running around like a chicken with my head cut off! The good part is, with this much shit to do I can't possibly have any time to be depressed.
kkscatnip: (kind of n-n-nervous)
Wrote this for my August bingo cards!

Card one has 17 pieces (500-1k words, generally; two bingos + other stories) set in the world of Heirloom, a longer novel that I have no fucking clue what I'm going to do with. These stories are set all over the place, though mostly in the time right after Samair and Ari arrive at the capital.

It's a pretty downer story/universe (this is what happens when your twin brother turns you into an immortal artifact) and so most of the stories are kind of downers. Also, incest. /forewarning.

Card one )

Card two has only one story, because I very suddenly had to find a place to move and pack all my shit. The world is one with three characters that I'll be writing all next year for SSBB.

Card two )

I do this on /y/ sometimes, but I've never done it on LJ/DW, but I thought: why the hell not?

So, here goes! Post a prompt or an image with some sort of sexual situation and I will write for it. A one-liner, 500 words--however much I am inspired to write.

If posting a prompt: Give me characters and a one to five word prompt for them.
If posting an image: In the case that it's not a fandom I'm familiar with, tell me what the fandom is so I can Google like a mofo.

Fandoms I am familiar with (in order of preference): Original, Baccano, RAG, Gundam 00, Soul Eater, Samurai Champloo, Darker than Black, Sword of the Stranger, Hikaru no Go, Ouran, Eureka 7, Gurren Lagann, S1 Glee, Blur, Star Driver, Evangelion (original series), Supernatural S3 and earlier, Kingdom Hearts (the first game only), Tales of Symphonia, Tales of the Abyss, Haruhi, Sousei No Aquarion*, Wolf's Rain*, Oofuri*, Toward the Terra*, Onmyou Taisenki*, KIBA*

*I have only vague recollections of these fandoms.

Please feel free to spam images/prompts from any fandom, not just the ones I named here. The purpose of the activity is to get myself more limber and flexible, writing-wise!

The thread on /y/ if you'd rather post there! And for my own ref, all the writefagging I've done up until now

[livejournal.com profile] smut_fest updates!

1) I wrote for the first round, Echoes! It's very short, but still a whole story despite the short length.

2) Sign-ups for the second round are open! We're doing sci-fi this time. We had a lot of awesome authors last time, so don't be shy--we'll have some really awesome writers this time too!

3) [personal profile] megyal and I came up with some fun topics for future rounds, including folklore, darkfic, best friends, fluff, and supernatural. We're excited :D

On another note, dear last.fm, why do you play Shakira so much? It's not that I dislike her, it's just that it's the same damn song every time. Oh, you.
kkscatnip: Fire Candy (bring it)
I'm reading a book called Blind Passion by Penny Brandon, and I'm having a lot of trouble reading it because it's just boring. I can see what the author is doing, but the delivery seems to fall flat.

And I think it's because of the way she keeps switching POVs to let us know what both the characters are thinking. The story is less compelling when there's no unknown factor, and it also takes the focus off of a certain aspect of the story and places it on every aspect and that's just too... unfocused.

It really sucks, because the author is a good author and the writing is technically good and the editing is good so far, but like-- the story can't hold my attention, because I can't figure out what story is trying to get told and I feel like I know everything that's going on in it. There's no conflict or anything yet, either, which makes me D: because I think that might perk my interest despite the lack of an unknown quantity.

I guess it's just a good lesson for my own writing, about story-telling and making sure I know what story I'm telling and telling it in a compelling way.
kkscatnip: Death Note (glad you agree with me)
I saw [personal profile] megyal's "Year in Fandom" review of all the stuff she'd written, and decided I wanted to do my own little review as well :D

I think the biggest lesson I learned (and really internalized) in 2010 was the whole idea of showing and not telling. I'd sort of been, yeah okay whatever, show don't tell, but I'd never really internalized the lesson in a way that made me start writing like that.

I think part of it is because I was so heavily involved in fandom (ie, [livejournal.com profile] rent_a_gundam) and in fandom you don't really get to show-not-tell because people already know about the characters for the most part.

So 2010 was a year of discovery! Discovering my own characters, and my ability to write a cohesive, coherent story. And my ability to write a long story, too.

Fic-wise for 2010! With comments. )

All together, it's about 158k worth of writing posted on the internet. Plus all the stuff I did for publication, which equals about ... holy fuck, 116k. Hoshit. And here I'd felt like I hadn't written that much! 274k @___@
